Getting To Grips With Essential Car Maintenance

When I got my first car twenty years ago, I was clueless when it came to maintaining it and keeping it in a roadworthy condition. As a result, I had to pay for costly repairs that could have been avoided if the car had been looked after better. I learned my lesson and started reading everything I could about basic car maintenance. I started this blog to share what I've learned in the hopes it will save other new drivers making costly mistakes. I blog about a variety of topics, such as troubleshooting uneven tyre wear, the benefits of regular servicing and maintaining your car during the winter months. I hope you find my blog useful.

Check These 4 Things Before Buying a Used Grain Trailer

Reginald Fox

You need to conduct adequate due diligence when you are shopping for used grain trailers in order to find the best piece of equipment for your farm. This article discusses some of the checks that inexperienced grain trailer buyers should conduct before making a buying decision.

The Hoppers

Check the hoppers carefully to confirm that they are in a good condition.  Examine their frames and sides to ensure that no cracks exist. Try opening the doors in order to ascertain how easily those doors close or open. You should also look at the slopes of the hopper to ensure that they are free from major dents and damage.

The Tarp

Operate the tarp and find out whether it rolls easily and smoothly. Check it to be sure no parts are missing. That tarp should also be free from tears and cuts. Avoid buying a grain trailer whose tarp is in a poor condition because it will be expensive to replace such a tarp.

The Tyres

Check each tyre carefully for wear and damage. Make sure that the tread depth that is left on each tyre is within the acceptable limits set by the authorities in your area. You should also be alert and check for tread separation on those tyres. Ensure that each tyre has no cracks or splits on its sidewall. If the tyres are in excellent condition, you delay how soon you will need to buy replacement tyres for your newly purchased used grain trailer.

The Frame

Pay special attention when inspecting the frame of the trailer. Ensure that the cross members and the side rails have not rusted excessively. The components of the frame should also be free from excessive twists and dents. This check should be performed with extreme care because any undetected defect can cause the trailer to have a structural failure when it is loaded with grain. Such structural failures can cause lengthy downtime in addition to the high monetary costs associated with fixing such damage.

Buying a grain trailer is a huge investment that should not be taken lightly. It may therefore be advisable for you to hire an expert to help you to evaluate the different used grain trailers on the market before you make a purchase. That professional will save you from buying a trailer that will drain your valuable resources as you conduct endless repairs for defects that you failed to notice when you initially inspected the grain trailer on your own.
